Sylvester “Sib” P. McCarthy, Jr., 76, of Mill Creek Manor, died Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Schuylkill Center, Pottsville.
Born in Ashland on March 23, 1949, he was a son of the late Sylvester and Eleanor (Miller) McCarthy.
Sib proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and later retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, where he worked as an Insurance Adjuster.
A man of deep faith and generous spirit, Sib served as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church in St. Clair. He was also a longtime member—and President—of the Independent Hunting Club, St. Clair. Known for his jovial personality, warm heart, and ever-present smile, he had a genuine way of making people feel welcome.
Sib had a lifelong love of Notre Dame sports and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Fighting Irish. He also cherished time spent outdoors, especially hiking with his beloved Vizslas, Seamus, Xavier, and Beamer. His kindness, friendliness, and good humor left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Kenneth “Beamer” McCarthy, Francis “Champ” McCarthy, James McCarthy, and Daniel McCarthy.
Surviving are his beloved wife, Donna (Procina) McCarthy; two sons, Michael McCarthy and his wife Melissa of Birdsboro, and John McCarthy of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Megan McCarthy and her partner Kristen Kemp of Birdsboro; a step-daughter, Melissa Green and her husband Jason of Annville; two cherished grandchildren, Shea and Massimo; and his devoted canine companion, Beamer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at St. Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, 250 E. Hancock Street, St. Clair, with the Rev. Msgr. William F. Glosser officiating. Friends may call at the church from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday and from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Sib’s memory to the Schuylkill County Viet Nam Veterans Memorial, Inc. C/O William Higgins 219 Deerfield Drive, Pottsville, PA 17901. Burial with full military honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.
